How Coffee Beans are Decaffeinated Matters – Why choose Swiss Water Process Decaf?

Millions of Moms love the taste, warmth and comfort of a great cup of coffee. Ideally organic coffee is what would always be chosen to avoid dangerous chemicals (Organic Really is Better for You). Also, if you are in the process of considering to become pregnant, currently are pregnant, or presently are breastfeeding, drinking caffeine is either not advised at all, or advised only in small amounts. So, the switch to decaffeinated coffee can be a great option.

When it comes to decaffeinated coffee, the Gold Standard for creating decaf is the Swiss Water Process. This is a patented caffeine extraction process that is 100% water-based and chemical free, which is perfect for Momma and baby! It was developed in Switzerland in 1933, and more formally introduced in 1988. The process starts by soaking the beans, which causes them to expand. Next, green coffee extract (GCE) is introduced to the green coffee beans. The caffeine in the beans migrates to the GCE while soaking in hot water. After this step, the GCE solution is saturated in caffeine and sent to the filtering process where the caffeine is trapped. Next, the furnace provides the final caffeine removal step in the extraction process. When the GCE is caffeine free, it is reintroduced to the green coffee beans. The entire process takes about 8-10 hours in order to reach the target percentage of 99.9% caffeine free. The image below helps to show the process.

There has been much attention in the news lately about the dangers of certain chemicals being used to decaffeinate coffee in large commercial operations.  Without a doubt, on behalf of yourself and your baby, you want to go with a safer option that doesn’t use chemicals such as the trusted Swiss Water Process.

Freshly roasted decaf coffee is delicious, and certainly a great way to enjoy a nice warm and comforting beverage. Just be sure you select a brand that uses organic beans and the Swiss Water Process for decaffeination! This way you will ensure that you are choosing the safest and best option for you and your baby.
